Dental veneers are thin shells that cover the front surface of the teeth to improve appearance and create a beautiful smile. Chipped, stained, uneven or spaces between teeth can be hidden by veneers. There are different types of veneers, such as porcelain, composite, palatal, lumineers or removable veneers. Porcelain veneers are the most common, since they have the same color as natural teeth while composite veneers are made of composite resin which is a mixture of inorganic and organic materials. Palatal veneers are onlays that restore the anterior (front) teeth. Lumineers are ultra-thin veneers that follow the natural shape and color of teeth and requires minimal tooth reduction and treatment is reversible. Removable veneers as the name suggests, are removable and do not require tooth reduction. However, this type of veneer looks unnatural and is susceptible to plaque build-up and gum disease.
Dental crowns cap a person’s damaged or decayed tooth or are placed on top of a dental implant to replace missing teeth. Bridges on the other hand, replace missing teeth. Bridges consist of two crowns-one on either end- and a bridge of replacement teeth lie in the area where there is tooth loss. The crowns found at the end of the bridge can be fused to existing teeth or attached to dental implants. Unlike a denture, there is no need to take it out and clean. Special cleaning instructions will be discussed by your dentist.
Dentures are removable replacements of missing teeth. There are two types of dentures, complete and partial. Complete dentures replace all teeth, while partial dentures are placed when some natural teeth are still intact.
